Walker gets 6th at Tour Down Under's Opening

The 2009 UCI ProTour circuit –and also UCI’s World Calendar- started on Tuesday at midnight (European time) in Australian soil with the first stage of the Tour Down Under, covering a 140-km route from Norwoord to Mawson Lakes. The day ended with a mass sprint and Germany’s AndrĂ© Greipel (Columbia) outsprinted the rest of the pack. Italian Davide Vigano (17th) was the best rider for the FUJI-SERVETTO team, and all FUJI-SERVETTO riders finished, except for Cuba’s Ivan Dominguez, who is experiencing knee problems.

The main rider for the “Blue squad” today was William Walker, whose efforts in the breakaway during the first half of the stage, along with Lafuente (Euskaltel) and Kaisen (Silence-Lotto), paid-off as he came across the second intermediate sprint of the stage in third position. As a result of the breakaway, Walker earned sixth place in the General Classification. Tomorrow’s stage will be a trip from Hahndorf to Stirling, over a 145-km route.
