Misfortune Keeps Vigano Out of Winning Chances

Bad luck struck the FUJI-SERVETTO squad in the fourth stage of the 2009 Tour of Langkawi, over a long, 221-km route from Melaka to Bangi. The great lead-out performances by the domestics of the team’s fastest riders, Hilton Clarke and Davide Vigano, almost paid off in today’s mass sprint.

After the 8 riders broke apart in the 50th kilometer  - Juanjo Cobo tried to be on a first, 15-man break of the day just moments before - the FUJI-SERVETTO squad kept with the tempo of race another time in the last kilometers, but distributing the lead-out roles all the way around, with Clarke helping Vigano.

With 250 meters remaining, the Aussie and the Italian were first and second in the group respectively, but Vigano got his bike hit by Sutton’s (Garmin) front wheel just in the moment he was going to start the final rush; Vigano’s gear broke ruining the chances of earning a stage win. Sutton fell to the tarmac, while Vigano managed to avoid crashing with him, but the Italian wasn’t able to separate both bikes and came into the finish zone with his rival’s bike stuck into his. Indonesian Samai (Letua) was the surprising stage winner ahead of race leader Gavazzi (Diquigiovanni), who will keep wearing the yellow jersey during tomorrow’s Queen Stage, over a short but extremely mountainous route of 102 k’s, from Petaling Jaya to the Special-categorized Genting Highlands.
